Overview

Fine lines disappear and wrinkles soften after just a few days use of our ethically produced bee venom skincare. We collect our world-famous Nelson bee venom from hives in the beautiful sunny Nelson countryside – we do this without harming our precious honey bees.

Made in Nelson from local (whenever possible) and imported ingredients. We collect all our bee venom from hives in the lovely Nelson region

Our silky luxurious bee venom creams and serums are hand-blended in small batches to ensure freshness.

They contain Manuka honey and certified organic oils, herbal extracts (with wonderful vitamins and omegas) and organic butters. Made in Nelson from local (whenever possible) and imported ingredients. We collect all our bee venom from hives in the lovely Nelson region.

We do not add parabens, petrochemicals, artificial fragrances, colours or other nasties.

At One Natural we operate our laboratory in a sustainable manner with the utmost respect for the environment. We wouldn’t dream of testing on animals.

Lynne (PhD) concentrates on research and development, and Scott with his M Agric Sc. who is the bee venom maestro.

Our photographs feature our families who help with all aspects of the business. Bee venom it not called Nature’s Botox for no reason… but it’s ‘Beetox’ without painful injections, bruising or frozen faces. Bee Venom is one of Nature’s strongest anti-inflammatories and works its magic by stimulating collagen production.

About

We are a Nelson, New Zealand based company, being home of the most renowned bee venom in the world. We are a two-family business and love it that our extended family all help with the business. We make our advanced skin perfecting organic based products in small batches for super freshness and all our creams and oils (except Argan) contain Nelson bee venom, that we collect ourselves, and Golden Bay manuka honey. Our bee venom is gathered using a glass collector that is placed in front of the hive – the bees sting the glass and leave behind only their venom – they immediately return to honey making.

We don’t like the idea of applying fragrances, colours, parabins or chemicals to our skin, so we don’t add them to our bases. We use instead, lovely organic botanical extracts (white tea, nettle extract and cucumber extract) blended with organic oils (for example papaya, rosehip, avocado, almond, macadamia, coconut). Our advanced moisturising creams sound good enough to eat, and we tell people to store them out of the reach of animals as they will eat them! We check every base ingredient for efficacy and safety on the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database (this USA database takes over 1 million hits a month) prior to inclusion. We are proud to list our ingredients on our labels.

Nelson bee venom has attracted international publicity with the likes of Camilla Parker-Bowles and Kate Middleton reportedly using this product. Bee venom has become known as ‘Nature’s botox’. OUR BEES live in the vineyards, almond orchards and the rolling countryside of the sunny Nelson region of New Zealand. They are not harmed during venom collection.

This is a two-family business and both Scott and Lynne are lucky enough to live in the beautiful Nelson region of New Zealand. Just to make sure they never have any down-time they both have life-style blocks; Scott lives at Golden Hills, Waimea West and Brian and Lynne live at Mahana, Upper Moutere. Scott and Lynne worked together at the renowned Cawthron Institute and from that association became both friends and business partners. They developed, trialled and produced bee venom creams using their own hives. Scott, with a Masters in Agricultural Science from Lincoln University, is the bee venom maestro and looks after the hives as well as collecting and manufacturing our products. Lynne, with a PhD from Massey University, researches, develops and trials new products and markets the range. While both can manage any aspect of the business they tend to have gravitated into these roles.

Lynne has always been interested in home-made skin care and it struck her at a young age that skin was not that different to horse tack – just keep it clean, oiled and out of the sun and it will stay smooth and supple forever! Hence, family and friends have long put up with being treated with Lynne’s fresh fruit, natural oils and honey concoctions. After meeting up with Scott at the Cawthron Institute, Lynne was introduced to the magic of bee venom and found the perfect active ingredient to blend with her bases. Lynne is a strong believer in the magic of fresh fruit and our advanced skin perfecting creams are packed full of natural organic fruit and organic nut oils for their skin enhancing anti-oxidants and vitamins.

Scott is an agricultural economist who has kept bees, both as a hobby and professionally, for more than a decade. Over his career, Scott has been at the forefront of sustainable fisheries management in New Zealand and also part of the Cawthron Institute here in Nelson. He currently is developing and running a number of sustainable businesses including a consultancy practice in natural resource management. He is self-employed so can indulge his passion for beekeeping and developing bee products. Scott is now a partner in PollenNation – a specialist business producing sustainable pure bee pollen (www.PollenNation.co.nz).

We approach our business in a sustainable manner with the utmost respect for the environment. We package in glass that is recyclable and never test on animals – only ourselves and our family and friends. They still love us and are often roped in to help with bee venom collecting, tending the bees and modelling for photo-shoots – always followed by a festive family do of course. We don’t photo-shop our images and our pro-age philosophy is ‘look great whatever your age’.

Bee Venom

We collect our bee venom using a state of the art European bee venom collector. The collector is placed in front of the hive and the bees are irritated with a gentle electrical stimulus and they respond by stinging the glass plate of the collector. However, unlike when they sting the skin, they are not harmed as their stingers do not penetrate the glass and their stingers are not left behind. Our bees then happily continue on with their honey making in the vineyards and fields of our lovely sunny region.

Honey bee venom has extensively scientifically researched over decades, and used for centuries in Oriental medicine. Its powerful anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties are well documented (Oren & Shai, 1997; Samy et al., 2006). It has been used in traditional medicine to treat arthritis, rheumatism, pain and skin diseases (Son et al., 2007). Melittin, a peptide and the major active component of Bee Venom (BV), has anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritis properties (Li et al., 2010). Bee Venom contains a number of other peptides, including apamin and adolapin, enzymes, biologically active amines (i.e., histamine and epinephrine), and non-peptide components – these have a variety of pharmaceutical properties including anti-inflammatory effects (Banks, Dempsey, & Barboni, 1983).

Bee Venom also has shown promising effects against acne, leading researchers to conclude that BV has significant antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects against P. acnes – they suggest that BV may be considered as an alternative treatment to antibiotic therapy for acne vulgaris (Han, Lee, Yeo, Baek, & Park, 2010). The wound healing properties of BV have been well studied as BV has been used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and for pain relief in traditional Oriental medicine. (Cho et al., 2010; Li, et al., 2010). More recent, very interesting South Korean research in 2011 has indicated that honey bee (Apis melifora. L) venom has significant wound healing, collagen and fibronectin promoting properties. While research into the cosmetic application of bee venom is limited, this is an exciting paper linking wound-healing and bee venom with that all important collagen production. We based the strength of the bee venom component of our products from extensive trials to ensure that our products were effective but not painful, mimicking the effects of a light sting but in a painless manner. Research into the bacteriostatic efficacy of Bee Venom, published in the journal ‘Nature’, determined that our number of stings per ml was within that same range.

The main active components of bee venom are:
Melittin (a peptide) is the main active compound comprising about 50% of bee venom. Melittin is one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatory agents known and induces the production of cortisol in the body. Cortisol is a natural agent of the body’s own healing process, being a hundred times more powerful than hydrocortisone.
Apamin comprises about 2-3 % of the venom and increases cortisol production in the adrenal gland thereby helping with the healing response. Apamin is a mild neurotoxin.
Adolapin (<1%), acts as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic because it blocks cycloxygenase.
Phospholipase A2 comprises 10-12% of the venom and it is the most destructive component of the venom. It is an enzyme and degrades the phospholipids which cellular membranes are made of. This component is the key allergen in bee venom and induces inflammation.
Phospholipase B (1%) has a detoxifying action.
Pyaluronidase (<2%) dilates the capillaries and increases their permeability and blood circulation, increasing the penetration of the bee venom into tissue.
Histamine (<1%) acts like hyaluronidase mentioned above but is also an allergen and is involved in the allergic response (hence the use of anti-histamines).
The remainder of the bee venom is made up of inactive proteins, peptides, minerals, sugars and pheromones.

Ingredients

Our advanced skin perfecting skincare range comes to you in glass jars with a one-year use-by date.

Our products contain Manuka honey, organic fruit and nut oils, and organic herbal extracts.
They do not contain parabens, petrochemicals, fragrances or anything nasty. To maintain their freshness, vitamins and omegas please store products in the cool, out of sunlight and out of range of animals and small children’ We’ve had reports of animals licking the jars and given our delicious looking ingredients’ lists, this is not unexpected. We certainly expect that young children would do the same. We do not use parabens, sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate, petroleum derivatives or artifical colours or fragrances in our products. Our creams can be left on overnight and worn under makeup. We check every base ingredient prior to inclusion on the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database for safety and efficacy.

WARNING : Bee venom is an active ingredient and our products are not suitable for those allergic to bee stings, pregnant or breast-feeding, or for children. They are for external use only. Please patch test on the inner elbow 24 hours before first use and do not use if you experience any swelling, allergic reaction, blistering or itchiness. Do not put these creams into your eyes. If you experience any adverse reactions please discontinue use and talk to us about a refund. A slight rosy glow and a light tingling may be experienced by some people. This is a normal reaction to bee venom cream and is not a worry.

The products work whether or not you experience the tingling feeling!

Nelson bee venom

Golden Bay manuka honey
This delicious active honey comes from the pristine Golden Bay area from bees that collect pollen from the native New Zealand manuka bush. Research has demonstrated that manuka honey has antiseptic skin healing and anti-bacterial properties.

Organic Avocado Oil
Is packed full of vitamins A, D and E. Avocado oil helps keep skin moist and rejuvenated and reduces itching, dryness, sun-damage and age spots.

Organic Almond Oil
Rich in vitamin D, almond oil moisturises and softens the skin. It is particularly nourishing when used regularly.

Beeswax Another lovely bee product and beeswax draws moisture to the skin and helps seal it in. Containing vitamin A, it softens and moisturises dry damaged skin.

Organic Coconut Oil
Is rich in essential fatty acids. Coconut oil is a safe, easily absorbed moisturiser for all skin types, it prevents dryness, delays wrinkle formation and promotes silky smooth skin.

Organic Cucumber Extract
Nothing says eye soothing better than cool cucumber slices. Our organic cucumber extract with active vitamin C and caffeic acid refreshes weary eyes and reduces swelling and dark circles under the eyes. Perfect to sooth the delicate eye area.

Cetearyl Olivate/Sorbitan Olivate
These emulsifiers blend together our creams, waxes, extracts and oils. It is derived from olive oil and combined with sorbitol (the alcohol form of naturally derived sucrose) and the natural emulsifying wax ceteayl alcohol. It promotes water retention and is an effective moisturiser in its own right.

Glycerin
Has a water binding property that helps the skin retain moisture. Our glycerin is derived from a purely renewable vegetable based origin.

Organic Jojoba Oil
With its vitamin A and E, jojoba oil has exceptional skin softening properties and minimises wrinkles to prevents skin dehydration. With anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-oxidant properties, this oil soothes and strengthens the skin.

Organic Macadamia Nut oil
Perfect for delicate skin this non-greasy oil contains palmitoleic acid, this is credited with reducing the rate at which skin matures. Used regularly this lovely light oil moisturizes and softens the skin and gives dry or damaged skin an added glow.

Organic Nettle Extract
Has for centuries been used as a medicine and food source. It has properties that may reduce inflammation, clearing the skin and making it healthier.

Organic Papaya Oil
Rub the inside of fresh papaya skin on your face and you will understand that this is a delicious skin renewal treat! With its natural fruit enzyme papain, papaya helps brighten the complexion by gently removing damaged or dry skin cells. This assists in the renewal of the top layer of skin cells and fights deep wrinkles and sun spots.

Organic Rosehip Oil
High in vitamin C and Omega 3 and 6 rosehip oil boosts skin renewal and elasticity. Although scientific evidence has demonstrated the properties of Rose Hip Oil in reducing scar tissue, the most effective way to benefit from rosehip oil is by using it as a skin moisturiser.

Organic Shea Butter Is a soothing cream with anti-oxidant properties similar to virgin olive oil. It draws moisture to the skin and seals it against the skin.

White Tea Extract With its powerful anti-oxidants it shows promising effects for its protection against skin damage through an anti-inflammation action to improve of skin cell characteristics – slowing the breaking down of collagen and elastin.

Organic Argan Oil
This difficult-to-produce oil originates from the Argan Forests of Morocco where it is sustainably harvested by the Berber women. Used for centuries for its purported anti-ageing and restorative properties the Moroccans call Argan Oil ‘Liquid Gold’.

Organic Avocado Oil
A rich source of vitamins A, B1, B2 & D this oil rejuvenates the skin and is credited with collagen-boosting properties making it ideal for mature skin.

Citric Acid
Produced from fresh citrus juice this is a natural preservative that promotes antioxidant support and is a natural anti-bacterial product that promotes skin toning.

Glyceryl Stearate, Sodium Stearate
These waxy solids are used to blend and emulsify the botanical extracts and oils. Glyceryl Stearate lubricates the skin giving it a smooth and soft appearance.

Organic Lemon Myrtle Extract
Research out of Charles Stuart University has indicated that problem skin may benefit from the very powerful antimicrobial and antifungal properties of this extract.

Organic Blackberry Seed Oil
A superb oil for mature and dry skins. Blackberry Seed oil nourishes and repairs dryness. Organic Evening Primrose Oil
Famous for centuries this medicinal oil is derived from the seed pods of the evening primrose plant. Used in both dietary and cosmetic preparations evening primrose oil derives its soothing properties from high concentrations of a natural fatty acid GLA (gamma-linoleic acid). Very few plants contain GLA and this important ingredient supports cell-structure and elasticity of the skin. This dry oil naturally retains moisture content on the skin.

Organic Pomegranate Seed Oil
This extremely rich and nutritious oil is great for the skin as well as the diet! This beautiful oil is derived from the jewel-like fruit of the Pomegranate and promotes the skin’s natural renewal process. Organic Raspberry Seed Oil
